The rolex Submariner have been a true icon among watch collectors for over 60 years. The first waterproof chronograph capable of withstanding water up to 100 meters was presented during the Geneva international fair back in 1954, and from that moment on, while not modifying some aesthetic canons, it has evolved into other features that today they only elevate the quality of the emblematic Rolex brand emblem: the crown.

Rolex: timeless passion

The Rolex brand and its more than one hundred years of age, was born from the founder Hans Wilsdorf, who was based on the philosophy that a watch to be defined perfect had to provide the correct time, and its movement had to be protected in the best way from shocks, wear, humidity, temperature changes and magnetic fields.

After a long time, the same philosophy and the same perfection remain at the basis of every development and production of any model.

Rolex Submariner: from the past to the present day

Before starting with the actual review of the Rolex Submariner 116610 LN, I would like to give a brief historical mention of how some aesthetic characteristics have evolved, while others remaining the same, have become the qualities that distinguish the Rolex brand.

The features that have not changed are those belonging to the 60204 model, the first to have a black dial, a graduated bezel, an Oyster bracelet, the rectangles indicating the hours 3, 6 and 9, the triangle pointing at 12 and the spherical indexes indicating the remaining times.

Over the years and the idea of creating a more and more perfect watch, have brought some changes regarding the size, shape and movement. These evolutions can be clearly seen in some parts that make up the watch, such as the winding crown, the recessed movement, the shape of the hands and the sapphire crystal that acts as a protective casing for the dial.

The real evolution of the Rolex Submariner Dates, however, took place in 1967 with the introduction of the date window and the Cyclops magnifying lens, an element which, positioned at 3 o’clock, makes the date clearly visible.

Returning to the present day, the brand founded by Hans Wilsdorf, presents some models that, redesigned and updated, are part of the entire Rolex Submariner collection.

Rolex Submariner: main features

Among the main features, the first not to go unnoticed is the case size of 40 mm, made of Oystersteel, an alloy which, generally used in the aerospace and chemical industries, guarantees high protection against corrosion and usury.

The monobloc middle case and screw-down caseback and crown complete the case, inside which a rotating bezel graduated in 60 minutes is able to provide the diver with diving times and decompression pauses in a safe and accurate way.

Waterproofness

The Rolex Submariners are waterproof up to a depth of 300 meters, thanks to the screw-down winding crown with triple water protection.

The caliber 3135, developed and produced by the Rolex brand, guarantees the precision of the unidirectional self-winding movement, which gives the diving watch autonomy, resistance and reliability.

Bracelet: aesthetics and functionality

The bracelet is definitely a strong point of the Rolex Submariners. The aesthetic, functional and practical result has been combined with the solidity given by Oyster steel, a special alloy that gives the watch not only super resistance, but also a remarkable shine as soon as it is polished.

All models in the collection are also equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, which allows the wearer to prevent accidental opening. But to make it even safer, the Glidelock mechanism has been introduced, with which the Rolex can be lengthened to one’s liking and obviously according to the size of the wrist. This safety system has been designed especially for divers, who can adjust it over the diving suit while diving. The three rows of flat links with a satin and glossy finish on the sides complete the elegance and sophistication of the entire Rolex Submariner collection.

Chromaligth: perfect readability

The dial offers excellent readability, thanks to the linear graphics with which the hour markers have been conceived which, in the shape of a rectangle, triangle and circle, are clearly visible on the black background. But a strong point of the Rolex brand is undoubtedly the Chromaligth display, a luminescent substance of blue color, which both hands and indexes are coated with, including the triangle on the bezel that represents the zero of the graduated scale. It should be noted that the perfect legibility of the dial is one of the main elements that distinguish Rolex Submariners.

Caliber: excellent accuracy

Rolex Submariners are equipped with a caliber ranging from 3135 for the 116610 LN model up to 3235 in the latest generation Submariners. In the 3235 caliber the power reserve is 70 hours with an accuracy of -2 / + 2 seconds per day, while the 3135 caliber allows for a 48-hour power reserve.

The watch also features a Parachrom hairspring that ensures perfect accuracy of the watch even in the event of violent shocks or vibrations.

The Rolex Submariner and Submariner Date models carry on the characteristics and traditions of the sports watch inaugurated in 1953, but with a few more details.

In the black Rolex Submariner, an aspect that underlines a change is given, both by the black dial, a shade that makes it perfectly legible under water, and by the construction of the case which, having wider and more squared lugs, give the watch a further touch of elegance and perfection. Despite the larger case, the Rolex brand has also kept the 40 mm diameter measurement for this model, a detail typical of almost all Submariner models.

Another evident aspect of its evolution is given by the ring nut, which is made of Cerachrom and is even more scratchproof and resistant to UV rays. The polished finish of the bezel perfectly matches the black lacquered dial and the white gold hands and indexes. Nor does the Chromalight display and its blue luminescence complete the beauty, essential to make the dial clearly visible especially at night.

In this Rolex Submariner 116610 LN with black dial, the updated case features the caliber 3135 which, operating at a frequency of 4 Hertz, guarantees the wearer a reserve power of approximately 48 hours, or a full two days. Also for this caliber, the certification issued by the COSC guarantees a time tolerance that can vary by only + 2 / -2 seconds per day. Another feature has been added to the Submariner Date models with caliber 3135, namely the instantaneous date indication at 3 o’clock with quick correction.

For this watch too, safety and the ability to adapt to any wrist do not deny the prestige of the brand. In fact, the bracelet features the Oysterlock clasp and the Glidelock micro-adjustment system, features that allow the wearer, including the diver, to be able to wear it or adjust it according to the needs of the moment or activity practiced.

Why buy a Rolex Submariner?

When you particularly love to show off a beautiful watch, you undoubtedly tend to prefer one of the many models in the Rolex Submariner collection. Among the many features that make them unique, resistance and sturdiness are certainly worth mentioning, not to mention the elegance with which they “dress” anyone’s wrist without distinction of roles or importance. In addition to being reliable for the precision given by its caliber, the attention to detail certainly completes the excellent choice, such as the different geometric shapes given to the hour indices or the magnifying glass which, placed at 3 o’clock, makes a good visible date.

For sports enthusiasts, Rolex Submariners are the best choice, both for maximum precision in any weather condition or other element of stress, and for the material with which they were made, an alloy destined to last over time.

Not to forget another valid reason that pushes the watch enthusiast to focus on the Rolex brand, namely the look, whether classic or sporty, can be worn on any occasion, from a ceremonial party to a more carefree, fearless one. to disfigure.

Rolex Submariners can also be purchased according to your tastes and according to the color of its dial, one in particular that stands out for its originality is the green Rolex Submariner. This watch, in addition to being made with all the features that distinguish the Rolex brand, is characterized by the green color of the bezel that surrounds the shiny black dial. For collectors it is definitely a piece not to give up.

The price of the Rolex Submariner Date 116610 LN

The price of Rolex Submariners is the result of a combination of features and qualities, as well as the excellent prestige of the Rolex brand. This line, in addition to being appreciated for its water resistance up to 300 meters deep, is famous for the Oyster case of the Submariner model, which in 1927, crossed the sleeve on the wrist of Mercedes Gleitze.

A curiosity that makes us understand the philosophy of the manufacturer of the Rolex brand, which was based on the principle of resistance over time. But returning to the cost, the price of the Rolex Submariner 116610 LN is € 8,550.00. This model, much in demand by lovers of the brand and beyond, is not easy to find and to have it on the wrist the waiting list could be long.

As for the used Rolex Submariner, the price can be around € 8,000, a cost that makes it clear how much the prestige of this collection keeps its value well, indeed very well.

Needless to say, if you want to give it a little thought, you are definitely making a great investment.
